Artwork Description

Appropriation, manipulation, transformation: these are some terms to describe Tena Saw’s approach to subject matter, motifs, and materials. Tena Saw’s ceramics are influenced by ancient forms, rock formations, Japanese traditions, Brutalist architecture, modern art, and simple field pottery from around the world. While earlier works are presented on wooden tables, the new sculptures also incorporate custom pedestals and plinths. These sculptures will be shown together with abstract large-scale paintings and material-driven spray paint drawings. In the artist’s large-scale paintings, graffiti tags join repeating forms resembling printed or stenciled motifs, yet with small variations that attest to the gesture of a hand-held brush. Smaller spray-paint drawings of minimal shapes suggest sunsets, horizons, landscapes, or architectural forms with a focus on the shimmering material quality of the spray paint itself.
